Legend of Legaia

Now here’s a weird game! Weird in a good way, this game is in the sense; a classic style RPG. Classic where you traverse the over-world in a mini-you-yet-bigger-than-your-surroundings style. Classic where only you and your friends can save the world since everyone you meet cannot help out in any way possible.

Yet the weirdness of the game stood out for me more than the Classic elements of the game. Legend of Legaia mixes various ideas really well.

I don’t wish to give anything away for anyone that hasn’t played this title.

It does have a very steep learning curve at the beginning though. Not in game-play but in pacing, you will face random encounters every 5 seconds when trying to reach any destination. There are also very few clues as to where to go & what to do next. This is actually good, it does make exploring vital to the story & game-play.

[The dev team was also really smart in creating different enemies by giving them the same name along with a level number. This way all they had to do was swap the texture map on each character. Same deal for all NPCs.]

Once you get passed [mentally] the frequency of the encounters the game opens up in many different ways compared to other RPGs.

The game does make you grind from the beginning, some Bosses are extremely difficult if you reach them at a lower level. We [my wife and I] actually had to grind pretty hardcore in order to defeat 2 Bosses & complete one [very obscure] quest.
