Resident Evil Revelations 2

As of late, depending on who you ask; the Resident Evil series is a hit or a miss with each new title. The Revelations Series has been a breath of fresh air, especially since the release of Resident Evil 4 back in 2005.

The release of ‘5 and ‘6 were highly anticipated thanks to the Mantastic Voyage that ‘4 turned out to be.

Unfortunately ‘5 and ‘6 did not reach the level of bad-assery that ‘4 did.

After Reading “The Art of Biohazard 5” it turns out that there were many elements that were dropped from the final game. They all sounded great on paper, but thinking about them realistically they would have made the game a Michael-Bay-bro-fest…

…Which is what ‘6 turned out to be. ‘6 is probably the prettiest game in the numbered titles, but it seemed to have a “content-esque-A.D.D”.

The Game starts with what will probably be the last scene in Bad Boys 3, then switched to classic Survival Horror. It then started channeling Resident Evil 5, then ended with a Call of Duty Mission. Oh and there was an extra stalker mission.

It seemed that every idea the team had made it into the final cut of the game.

Which, curiously enough the Revelations series does not suffer from. Revelations is a tight and well tuned machine. The original Revelations was created for the Nintendo 3DS then ported to console. It featured small, 40 minute-ish chapters. Which worked well for the handheld platform, the game was also very long.

It changed Cruise Ships [twice], went back in time & even managed to squeeze in a main-story-like adventure for a pair of sidekicks. But the cherry on the Biohazard cake was “Raid Mode”. ‘Raid is basically a horde mode with RPG-like elements. You, your weapons [and the enemies] start out at level 1. As each mission progresses everything levels up. The Maps are small sections of  the main levels from the game.

Revelations 2 is also a nice and tight entry within the series. The main drawback is that the game was released in Episodic format. This drew me away from the title when it was first announced.

There are a total of 4 main chapters [each is basically played twice, first with Claire and Moira. Then with Barry and Natalia.] There are also two extra chapters that show you how and why the events at the end of the game tie together. Although creative, the extra chapters can be debated if they were really needed.

One especially suffers from technical difficulties.

The new crack is Raid Mode again. This time ‘Raid features maps from ‘5, ‘6 and Revelations 1. Almost a “Resident Evil Greatest Hits”.

Enemies in Raid Mode also “combine” into new enemies. For example, a “tank” enemy can be covered with a “Shield” making it impenetrable thus, making you take a new strategy. Some enemies can also “chain” attributes, making your life a living hell.

Bring friends.

Overall, if you decide to pick this up to add to your library I would suggest the disc version. It contains all four chapters, the 2 extra chapters and bonus content for Raid Mode.

Something that I missed [thanks Amazon description].

One thing that should also be of note:

The main reason I picked this game up was because Capcom actually gave away the first fourth of their game for free. Yes sir, unheard of in this day and age. The first chapter of Revelations 2 was [hopefully still] available for free.
