Wytches
Back in the day [1994] you could say I was a bit of a Comic Book collector. There was a local Comic Shop 2 blocks away from home, it was definitely a place I frequented pretty often.
I was constantly purchasing the latest issues of my favorite titles.
- X-MEN [and their variants]
- Batman [BEST.SUPER.HERO.EVER. ¡Fuck You Superman!]
- Spawn [best artwork at the time]
- Ninjak [¡Joe Quesada baby!]
To name a few.
I have been out of the Comics/Graphic Novel game for a while. Although it was fun collecting issues as soon as they came out, today I prefer the Omnibus/Volume treatment. Same deal for TV shows, I prefer to binge at my leisure, plus I hate commercials.
I started “re-collecting” with Volumes. Starting with HUSH [Batman, of course][¡Oh man, that Jim Lee run!]. I also started looking out for cool Novels outside of the mainstream hero gallery. I have stumbled upon some great stories on my own. Although I owe this discovery to my main man The Drake.
WYTCHES [as spelled in the book] is an awesome Horror Graphic Novel. It has a fresh take on Witches and the “small town cult feel”. Plus it is illustrated by the amazing JOCK.
The story focuses on a Family that moves into a small town, trying to leave behind a traumatic event and looking for a fresh start. They soon discover that the town actually has its own secrets.
It is presented in two time-lines, “current events” and “past events”. Each time-line shines light on the “how” and “why” things are happening.
Along with Jock’s amazing artwork the book features what appears to be a water color background layer. This actually reminded of A SERIOUS HOUSE ON SERIOUS EARTH.
Too Mantastic.
The book touches on many themes such as: Family, Friendships and the Small Town mindset when it comes to rumors and superstition.
A great read, once I finished it I wished there was more Wytches.
Although, the story did wrap up nicely.
