GANTZ:0

:// INTRO

I have a sickness, well, a couple of them really. One of the main ones being that I always start streaming something, hit the 15 minute mark then exit and choose something else.

(That is probably why posts take too long to appear on the site.)

About 5 months ago (damn, that’s a lifetime ago), I loaded up GANTZ on Netflix. Of course, this must have been around 2 am, hence, the 15-minute mark.

Two nights ago, I finally decided to be mantastic on restart GANTZ for a full viewing.

:// JAPANESE GHOSTBUSTING

The set-up is pretty simple, some individuals which pass away have an opportunity to buy back their lives by defeating “demons” (or ghosts, the story is a bit vague on what exactly the creatures are).

You follow a highschool student (of course), who is just getting out of work and heading home to take care of his little brother since their parents passed away some time ago (of course, again)(very Japanese).

There is suddenly a full-scale attack on Tokyo and Osaka by unknown creatures. The interesting part here is that the media and world are fully aware of the situation due to the news coverage, making it interesting how the (US?) military and citizens of Japan react to the attacks.

You have your expected roster of heroes: the poor sap caught in the middle of the fight, the brooding loner who doesn’t want to help anyone, the showoff who (eventually) gets himself killed, the beautiful woman who is embarrassed of her beauty, etc.

Layer that with some classic Anime cheese and boom! You have GANTZ!

Although, the awesomeness of the execution of the flick does overcome the anime stereotypes making this a huge win by TOHO Animation.

The Japanese are very (VERY) good at everything tech related (minus online matchmaking). And in GANTZ you see them flex their muscle in terms of style, production, and animation.

All of the characters look extremely pretty, the attention to detail is second to none and the creativity behind all of the enemies are extremely well done and they take cues from Japanese folklore.

Which is nice, there is a lot of culture out there and it is fantastic to see people fully embrace it and share it with the rest of the world.

:// NETFLIX AND CHILL

This is well worth your time regardless if you are a fan of Japanese animation or not.

The mix of horror/action/sci-fi is a breath of fresh air compared to most of the shows out there.

It is also a solid 90 minutes or so, the story and action pick up quick, which also suits the production very well.

Give it a shot, tell them Roberto sent you.
