Attack the Block

>> ATTACK THE BLOCK TRAILER <<

:// INTRO

Have you ever had the feeling of amazement? In this case, someone recommending something that you’ve never heard of, diving in and coming out the other side a changed man (person)?

I enjoy foreign films, now don’t get me wrong, I don’t enjoy them in a snobby way. And yes, I have seen “Life is Beautiful”, “Amores Perros” (regrettably), Solei, etc.

When I talk about foreign films I am not referring to “Oscar-worthy” movies, the Oscars suck, period. I am simply talking about movies created outside of the United States of America, yes my children, there are a lot of great movies made outside of these 50 states.

As a horror fan, I also enjoy horror-adjacent films. Sci-Fi would be a close second after horror.

And here we have it: Attack the Block

:// THE KING’S ENGLISH

One day, a good buddy of mine told me about this movie. It had the greatest premise ever: a gang of kids vs aliens.

Sold.

It’s funny how “low-budget” movies are kind of a drag now, especially their trailers. Most of the trailers released these days give away the entire movie (the invisible man, anyone?). Not to mention, they usually (always) feature scenes not seen in the final cut.

Editing a trailer is an art form in itself, so I can understand the shortcomings of the bad ones.

I checked out the trailer and was immediately hooked. It’s a good thing my buddy is a bit of a media-hoarder since he brought in the blu ray the next day.

I love you, Drake!

As with all foreign films (for me) I had to throw on the subtitles. Yes, even on the British and Spanish flicks. Good thing I’m bilingual.

You ever heard of “getting tooled up” or “vamos por el curro”?

Exactly.

So again, the setup is super simple. A gang of kids discovers aliens are landing in their “council estate” or, as we call them in the States: their “projects”.

It appears to be New Years eve, or a very important British holiday since there are fireworks going off all night. They kill one alien when shortly after, more arrive and appear to want vengeance.

Good writing is good writing, no matter which language it’s written in. Attack the Block has excellent pacing, great character building and not to mention, it’s actually a fun time.

Shagging

:// YOU’D BE BETTER CALLING THE GHOSTBUSTERS, LUV

This movie absolutely tanked in theatres, especially here in the States. That’s due to poor, actually non-existent marketing. Again, also an art form in itself.

Just like Evil Dead, this movie found its audience on home video.

And just like Evil Dead, this movie is a (modern) stone-cold cult classic.

Watch it. Now.

You’re Welcome.
